What Are Dermal Fillers Used for?

When it comes to anti-aging, your options don’t get more versatile than dermal fillers. At Premiere Aesthetics in Fort Myers, FL, we offer several fillers from several manufacturers; if you have a cosmetic problem, we can virtually guarantee that one of our options will be right for you.

What Are Dermal Fillers Used for?

Dermal fillers are injectables designed to, primarily, rejuvenate aging skin by encouraging collagen production. However, they can also be used to restore the appearance of health by adding volume to areas of volume loss caused by extreme weight loss. Here’s a brief overview of some of the most common uses of this type of injectable:

Rejuvenating the Hands

Due to how thin the skin of the hands is, the hands are among the first parts of the body to show the signs of aging. The hands also age prematurely and lose volume quickly because people often neglect to apply sunscreen to their hands regularly, and UVC damage both weakens existing collagen and impedes the skin’s ability to produce new, healthy collagen.

If you have age spots on your hands due to sun damage, or the veins on your hands are too visible for your liking due to volume loss, Radiesse is the perfect dermal filler for you. This CaHa (calcium hydroxyapatite)-based dermal filler is made up of tiny gel microspheres that smoothly and flawlessly fill in gaps in your skin where collagen used to be. The treatment takes mere minutes and the results last up to two years.

Rejuvenating the Ears

Are your ears thinning as you age? Are you starting to notice lines and creases in the mirror? If so, we have the perfect dermal filler for you. Most hyaluronic acid-based fillers can be injected into just one or two strategic points to lift sagging earlobes that succumbed to the effects of gravity and weak collagen. You can even use fillers to minimize the appearance of over-sized piercings. You’ll be amazed at how much your confidence increases after treatment.

Augmenting the Cheeks

One of the most common uses of fillers is cheek augmentation. It is incredibly common for people to lose a lot of weight in the face, particularly in the cheeks, over the course of an illness or age-related weight loss. Unfortunately, gaunt, hollow cheeks can make you look years older than you actually are. Luckily, we offer Juvederm Voluma XC to restore volume to the cheeks.

Not only will this fill in your cheeks, making you look younger and healthier, but it will also enhance the appearance of your cheekbones and lift sagging cheek skin. This truly is the all-in-one treatment for people who want a mid-face lift, but don’t have the time or money to commit to an invasive procedure. Treatment will take no longer than an hour, and you are not required to take any time off from work after your session.

Augmenting the Lips

Just like the skin on the hands, the skin on the lips is incredibly thin. Therefore, it is highly susceptible to volume loss with age. Even worse, it’s not uncommon for lips to be asymmetrical. Whether you’re looking to correct a subtle asymmetry, or you want to volumize your pout dramatically, we have a dermal filler for you.

Specifically, we offer Juvederm Volbella XC to add volume to thin lips. This durable dermal filler features robust hyaluronic acid molecules manufactured with advanced cross-linking technology, resulting in a plump pout that lasts up to 18 months. After that, you may not need a follow-up treatment for another six months. The volume loss will occur gradually rather than overnight. You may not even notice your results fading at first.

Rejuvenating the Skin Around the Mouth

If you think the nasolabial folds (parentheses lines) running vertically from your nose to your mouth is making you look older than you are, we have the perfect dermal filler for you. Juvederm Vollure was designed to erase these lines with ease. However, it is not appropriate for individuals who have nasolabial folds caused by hyperactive muscles.

If your nasolabial folds are caused by hyperactive muscles, we offer four FDA-approved wrinkle relaxers, each with unique benefits. Wrinkle relaxers work by blocking the communication sent from your brain to the nerve endings in your muscles that causes hyperactivity. The results of these injections, usually last between three and six months. However, more durable results can be enjoyed after regular follow-up sessions.

Rejuvenating the Forehead

Wrinkle relaxers can also be used in conjunction with a dermal filler to non-invasively lift the upper face. We can erase mild-to-moderate lines around the eyes and relax the muscles between and above the eyebrows. This erases moderate-to-severe forehead wrinkles and folds, turning back the sands of time for up to 15 years.

Rejuvenating the Eyes

You don’t need a liquid facelift to rejuvenate the skin around your eyes. If you’re satisfied with the appearance of your forehead, we can use Belotero Balance to erase dark circles and bags beneath your eyes that cannot be covered with makeup.

We can also administer a hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler around the eyes to erase lines extending from the corners of your eyes. Furthermore, the muscles above your eyes can be relaxed for a softer appearance.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Dermal Fillers Injections?

Nearly everyone can be considered a good candidate for dermal fillers cheeks. Active ingredients vary based on the manufacturer of the filler, but most of the ingredients used are chemical compounds found naturally in the skin.

For example, Juvederm’s active ingredient is hyaluronic acid, a chemical compound found in abundance in your skin; you just have to let us know if you are allergic to lidocaine. Lidocaine is found in most Juvederm formulations.

Good Candidates for Juvederm

Good candidates for Juvederm are most individuals who are over the age of 21 and not allergic to lidocaine. We say most individuals who fall into both of those categories because there are other factors we must consider when determining who is a good candidate for Juvederm injections.

For example, you may be over 21 and not allergic to lidocaine, but if you are pregnant, nursing, or actively fighting an illness, you should hold off on treatment. You should also hold off on treatment if your skin is irritated or your doctor says you can’t stop taking certain medications right now. For instance, to prepare for this treatment, it is crucial that you stop taking any medications, such as baby aspirin, that can thin your blood.

During your initial consultation, we will discuss your medical history and current health to ensure these injectables will be safe for you.

Good Candidates for Radiesse

The ideal candidate for Radiesse is an individual who is between the ages of 35 and 60 and wants to restore volume to the hands or face. You can still receive this dermal filler safely if you are over the age of 60, but the results of treatment won’t last as long if you’re over 60. Like most Juvederm formulations, this injectable includes a small amount of lidocaine.

During your initial consultation, we will review your medical history and discuss your current health to ensure that you are healthy enough for a small lidocaine injection. Most people who are not allergic to this medication are healthy enough to receive the medication, but certain medical conditions can cause contraindications. These include musculoskeletal disorders, organ failure, and low potassium in the blood.

How Should I Prepare for Dermal Fillers Injections?

Remember, you need to stop taking anything that can thin your blood for Juvederm injections. This also holds true for Radiesse, Belotero Balance, and wrinkle relaxers. You should also take steps to prevent sun damage in the two weeks leading up to your session. Such steps include wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen that offers adequate protection and avoiding tanning beds.

You should also support the health of your collagen by drinking plenty of water and focusing on eating healthy foods in the two weeks before your session. How much you need to drink to stay hydrated depends on your height, weight, sex, and activity level, but most people need to drink between three and four liters daily. Eat plenty of protein and citrus fruits during these two weeks; minimize your consumption of processed carbs and unhealthy fats.

Can I Drink Alcohol Before My Treatment?

No. Just as NSAIDs affect blood viscosity, alcohol affects the viscosity of the blood. It also dehydrates you, flushes essential micronutrients out of your body, and elevates your blood pressure. It is best to avoid drinking alcohol in the six weeks leading up to your scheduled session. At the very least, you should abstain from drinking alcohol in the two weeks preceding your session.

You should also avoid consuming tobacco products and using smoking cessation tools in the two to six weeks leading up to your treatment session. Such products contain nicotine, a chemical compound that elevates your blood pressure, weakens your existing collagen, and impedes the skin’s ability to produce new collagen. To enjoy the best results, do your best to support your collagen health.

How Should I Care for My Skin After Dermal Filler Injections?

Since dermal filler injections are non-invasive, there is not too much you have to do after treatment. Avoid any topical medications that will irritate your skin during the first two days following your treatment. For example, you should not apply any topical acne medications that contain retinoids (a vitamin A derivative). Vitamin A increases photosensitivity and can trigger sunburn. On that note, you should also be diligent in your use of sunscreen.

To enjoy your final results as soon as possible, avoid strenuous exercises or other physical activities that will raise your pulse above 100 beats per minute. When you work out vigorously, your body uses a lot of energy and doesn’t have enough energy to focus on healing your skin. Furthermore, your blood pressure elevates to an abnormally high level. Your blood pressure should remain within a safe, healthy range during the first 48 hours after treatment.
